Sustainability is central to Kinabuhi’s mission, which is to create handcrafted fashion that works to regenerate the planet, provides sustainable livelihood opportunities, and helps people build meaningful connections with their clothes.
    Sustainability initiatives
To address the issue of excessive waste and the negative environmental impacts of the production of virgin synthetic materials in the fashion industry, Kinabuhi creates its handwoven textiles and fashion products using either upcycled high-quality second-hand garments, deadstock fabrics and scrap fabrics, or Philippine natural fibres. For natural fibres, we use Philippine cotton and Abaca, a plant endemic to the Philippines that helps minimise soil erosion and helps prevent floods and landslides.

Through Kinabuhi’s partnerships with NGOs such as Fibershed Philippines, we aim to support Philippine farmers, yarn manufacturers and handloom weavers work towards adopting regenerative practices. Over the next year, we are working together with Fibershed to develop a roadmap for Philippine natural fibre yarn and textile production. We are also working towards securing funding to lease a plot of land to grow Philippine cotton fibres using regenerative agricultural practices. Through this project, we aim to create an example that we hope to replicate in different locations across the country while also collecting data on the environmental impact of growing the fibre. In terms of environmental impact we are looking at water, climate change, and biodiversity.

Kinabuhi is passionate about craft innovation and collaborating with a community of independent indigenous handloom weavers, pattern makers and sewers to explore the Philippine identity through textiles and fashion. Together with these Philippine artisans, we co-create contemporary handwoven textiles and fashion products that are rooted in Philippine culture while aiming to have a global appeal. These makers often struggle to have a stable source of income and we are committed to supporting the growth of their businesses, not only through our orders but also through providing training and technical support in terms of production, operations, and financial management. Our aim is to support these communities in creating businesses that can be a fulfilling and secure source of livelihood. We are also committed to ultimately paying living wages. We are not there yet but we are currently conducting the research needed to determine what a living wage is for our partner weavers, pattern makers and sewers. However, the makers we work with are currently paid above the government mandated minimum wage. They are currently paid between 600 - 1000 php a day, the minimum wage in Cebu is 468 php a day.

At KocharTex we walk the talk about sustainable processes. Several initiatives have been taken in our sustainability journey so far and we are committed to this cause. We have also switched to eco-friendly raw materials, dyes & chemicals and are compliant with global standards like REACH, OEKO-TEX, RWS & RCS
    Sustainability initiatives
Usage of recycled wool yarn as our core raw material We use completely recycled wool yarn as our core raw material. All our fabrics are manufactured using recycled wool yarn, turning waste into fabrics that find use right from outerwear, home textiles and protective clothing among several others. We are certified under RCS. The Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) sets the criteria for third-party certification of recycled materials and chain of custody. We are also RWS certified. The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) requires all sites, from wool farmers to the seller in the final business-to-business transaction, to be certified. RWS farmers and ranchers must meet animal welfare, land management, and social requirements. KocharTex operates a management system that ensures that all applicable criteria of the Standard are fully implemented. We have established, implemented, and maintain documented procedures and work instructions covering all applicable criteria of the RWS. Water Conservation We have implemented a 3-pronged strategy of Reduce, Recycle and Reuse for water conservation. State of the art machinery with reduced liquor ratio at our dyeing plant decreases the water required per kg of fabric. This has resulted in a substantial reduction in water consumption and allied process chemicals. Instead of discharging the process effluent, it is treated in the ETP (Effluent treatment plant) through a series of biological treatments followed by physiochemical treatment to ensure parameters like COD, BOD and TDS, are well under desired levels and thus make the effluent usable for our processes. Adoption of Renewable sources of energy Our aim is to reach 40% this year: We have Installed over 500 KW of Rooftop Solar PV which is able to meet 25% of our energy demand. Our aim is to reach 40% this year. Installation of Solar PV:Zero waste, Zero Pollution: Replaced Petcoke with Biomass Pellets as fuel for our Boiler and Thermopack. It’s a perfect example of waste to energy. The fuel doesn’t release any harmful gases in the environment, and hence we exemplify zero waste, zero pollution.
