Muya Ethiopia

Hall: National Gallery Stand: R14

Muya Ethiopia was founded in 2005 by a group of passionate practitioners of
Ethiopian handicrafts and textiles whose enthusiastic support and direct
involvement with Ethiopian cultural artefacts extends back several decades
both in the private sector (Muya's designer, Sara Abera, founded her first
company in 1989, and started designing and collecting textiles at just 19)
and the public sector (Jacques Dubois has been a tireless proponent of
Ethiopian traditional design, and contributed directly to setting up the
country's first crafts shop back in 1970). Muya is today Ethiopia's foremost
producer and exporter of Ethiopian handicrafts, and is a byword for unique
Ethiopian designs and innovation. Muya's historic villa in the foothills of the
Entoto Hills is a dynamic springboard for the country's best master weavers,
master potters, master artisans and designers to reach world markets – here,
the Ethiopian master artisan tradition is not only respected and valued but
given access to the world. The villa, which consists of a series of bustling
workshops in which master potters and master weavers display their
expertise and know-how, busily crafting the high quality artefacts and
textiles that Muya is renowned for throughout the world, is also a de facto
centre of excellence for Ethiopian handicrafts, where tradition is not only
preserved but offered a window on the world. The imperial era villa is the
perfect venue to showcase the handicrafts and textiles produced for Muya by
Ethiopia's best traditional, yet innovative, master artisans
