Oversized Alpaca Long Cardigan

Peru Collective Hall: National Ground Stand: J01

Oversize alpaca long cardigan.  Jacquard Design .WFTO certified manufacturer

Alpaca is a sustainable fiber for the following reasons:

1. Low-Impact Grazing

Alpacas have soft, padded feet instead of hooves, so they don’t damage the soil or uproot grass. They nibble gently without pulling plants out, allowing pastures to regenerate faster and preventing land degradation.

2. Efficient Feed & Water Use

Alpacas consume far less food and water compared to other fiber-producing animals (like sheep or goats). They convert food to energy very efficiently, reducing their environmental footprint.

3. Naturally Biodiversity-Friendly

Because alpacas graze lightly and in small herds, they help maintain the balance of highland ecosystems, especially in the Andes where they originated. They do not contribute to overgrazing or desertification.

4. No Harsh Chemicals Needed

Alpaca fiber comes in 22+ natural colors, reducing the need for chemical dyes. It also doesn’t contain lanolin, so it doesn’t require chemical-heavy scouring like sheep’s wool.

5. Long-Lasting & Biodegradable

Alpaca fiber is extremely durable, meaning products last longer and reduce waste. At the end of its life cycle, alpaca fiber is fully biodegradable and returns safely to the earth.

6. Ethical & Low-Stress Shearing

Shearing is done once a year, and proper Andean and U.S. standards ensure animals are handled responsibly. Alpacas tend to experience less stress during shearing than other fiber animals.

7. Supports Indigenous & Rural Communities

In Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, alpaca production sustains small Andean communities, promoting fair trade, cultural preservation, and responsible land use.
